Seif, Yusuph
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to identify challenges that were facing cargo handling equipment at Dar es Salaam Port and devise appropriate measures to overcome them. Data were analyze by using content analysis technique which is the most desirable in this study, the data were presented in form of tables and pie’ charts by using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) and Microsoft excel as tool of analysis and later on explanation was done in words to give clear interpretation of findings
The findings of the conducted study indicates that Dar es Salaam port have revealed common challenges of port cargo handling equipment’s such Truck attachments, Gravity conveyors systems, Conveyors , Lifting, Order picking trucks, Industrials tracks and attachments and Power rollers conveyors are available at Dar es Salaam port but there were few in number compared to port operation and result on inefficiency on port operations such as delay of loading and unloading activities which result on port congestion. Other equipment for loading and unloading have to hire from other country, also it is expensive in terms of money where by many labors are needed in operation.
For the purpose of an organization to achieve its goals effectively and efficiently, the following are recommended: Provision of cargo handling equipment and not renting from neighboring countries because a lot of foreign exchange (income) get lost or disappear, In minimizing running cost that resulting from poor working machines that need to be disposed and replaced with efficient machines, an organization needs to procure modern machines that fits to the world technology for profit making, Dar es Salaam Port should arrange periodic training and workshops for workers to improve efficiency in cargo handling equipment, Highly and modified equipment to be used so as to facilitate the port operation, Improvement of Port Exit Gates.
Currently there are three exit gates (Gate number 3, 4, and 5) which do not match with the flow of trucks out of the port.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to identify Physical Distribution and Medical Supplies challenges by the Medical Supplies Department as from 2010 – 2015 in Tanzania. Data were analyze by using content analysis technique which is the most desirable in this study, the data were presented in form of table, graph and pie chart by using statistical software and later on explanation was done in words to give clear interpretation of findings. This study recognizes the fact that Population of Tanzania has been growing an average of 3.5% annually from 38.93 million in 2006 to 44.9 million in 2012. The increase in population has a direct impact in the supply of medicine, medical equipment and overall efficiency at the health care system, lead to the increases challenges on physical distribution and medical supply such as inadequate forecasting, insufficient funds, delays in funding disbursements and long lead times, Non-availability or insufficient quantities of essential drugs; Unreliable services; Over-invoicing; Delays due to unnecessarily long procedures or long waiting chains; High prices compared to other sources of supplies; and Delivery delays o medical supply. It is recommended that, In order to overcome the problems, the following challenges should be addressed: Implement national medicine and medical supplies quantification program. Maintain working relationships with PPRA and other regulatory authorities for streamlining procurement of medicines and medical supplies. Strengthen MSD-Suppliers relationship management, Improve internal and external communication and share reports on new or changing developments in health sector. Fleet Requirements & Management: MSD needs to reassess their optimal fleet requirements (e.g. motorbikes). Build/Upgrade Dispensaries (Funding). Information Technology (Project) should be improved this will increase visibility and improve ordering at zone and DSP level. There is a need for an inventory management course (course material available), especially at district level. MSD requires additional warehouse space at all levels of the supply chain, especially at district level. However, due to the complexity of MSD’s inventory management, in is unclear how MSD can assist in this area. It is important to note that a further assessment is required.

The analysis on a serious traffic jam in Dar es Salaam city
Gama, Dingiswayo, Z.
ABSTRACT
This paper analyzes a serious traffic jam in Dar es Salaam City and the expected solutions to eradicate the severity of the problem in the city so as to make ease traffic flow.
The Dar es Salaam public transport has been performing great despite the existing poor infrastructures. For the last decade the traffic jam has been yearly increasing causing many problems to consumers. The affected groups include the private vehicle owners, the commuter bus drivers, taxi drivers, employees from both private sectors and civil servants, students, pedestrians and all other city dwellers.
This study has observed that the following issues affected the traffic flow in the city of Dar es Salaam. The first issue is the unlimited influx of vehicles in the city that account for about 62 per cent of the total vehicles countrywide. The second issues is the inadequate quality of infrastructures to cope with the influx of vehicles in the city whereby potholes, sands, narrow roads, inadequate feeder roads and lack of frequent road maintenances give rise to a strict rise of traffic jams in the city. The fourth issue is the location of most services and major activities in the city centre that enforce the city dwellers from peripheral areas to find their desired services in the city centre hence increasing traffic congestion.
The study finally recommends that there is a great need for authorities responsible for traffic control that include SUMATRA, traffic police and other stakeholders to act very seriously to resolve the situation because they seem not to fulfill their obligations accordingly. Also the government should reconsider deeply the regulations and principles governing the public transport in the city by taking serious drastic actions to prohibit the private vehicles in the city centre because it is the great cause of traffic jam in the city centre.

Luyekela, Mayunga, M.
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was how the parking places contribute to traffic congestion in Central Business District at Dar es Salaam (CBD), Primary and Secondary sources of data were used to collect information. Documentary review on journals, new papers and books were used to collect secondary data; and questioners and interview were used to collect primary data. Data were analyze by using Microsoft excel and were presented in form of Tables and explanations were given those findings.
Summary of the study revealed that Poor management of parking which include on-street, parking lots, parking garages, public and private. Also, too much car parking in the wrong location results into large flows of cars to local streets, hence causes traffic congestion. Parking and traffic congestion were inter-related in the sense that the absence of parking spaces results to traffic congestion situations.
It is concluded that, there are many challenges on determining how parking places contribute to traffic congestion in Central Business District at Dar es Salaam (CBD).The challenges are lack of safety and comfort for the pedestrian movement, inadequacy of parking spaces, rapid increase in number of cars, inadequate road infrastructure, insufficient of location of parking places, favorable parking prices (cost charges) and demand for parking is greater than the amount of space available
It is recommended that shared parking in the destinations should be encouraged also public parking including on-street, municipality’s off street and commercial parking (for profit) facilities generally may serve multiple destinations. Special shuttle buses or free transit service may be provided, building of underground and upstairs packinghouse should be emphasized so as to reduce the amount of land required for parking facilities, reduce the use of private automobile and increase an affordable and reliable public transport. Rates should be set to optimize parking facility use. Parking charge to be increased. Introduction of modern railway transport systems across the city. Diversification of basic social services from city center to other areas outside the city, Introduction of Restrictive policy should implemented.
