The analysis on a serious traffic jam in Dar es Salaam city

The analysis on a serious traffic jam in Dar es Salaam city
Gama, Dingiswayo, Z.
ABSTRACT
This paper analyzes a serious traffic jam in Dar es Salaam City and the expected solutions to eradicate the severity of the problem in the city so as to make ease traffic flow.
The Dar es Salaam public transport has been performing great despite the existing poor infrastructures. For the last decade the traffic jam has been yearly increasing causing many problems to consumers. The affected groups include the private vehicle owners, the commuter bus drivers, taxi drivers, employees from both private sectors and civil servants, students, pedestrians and all other city dwellers.
This study has observed that the following issues affected the traffic flow in the city of Dar es Salaam. The first issue is the unlimited influx of vehicles in the city that account for about 62 per cent of the total vehicles countrywide. The second issues is the inadequate quality of infrastructures to cope with the influx of vehicles in the city whereby potholes, sands, narrow roads, inadequate feeder roads and lack of frequent road maintenances give rise to a strict rise of traffic jams in the city. The fourth issue is the location of most services and major activities in the city centre that enforce the city dwellers from peripheral areas to find their desired services in the city centre hence increasing traffic congestion.
The study finally recommends that there is a great need for authorities responsible for traffic control that include SUMATRA, traffic police and other stakeholders to act very seriously to resolve the situation because they seem not to fulfill their obligations accordingly. Also the government should reconsider deeply the regulations and principles governing the public transport in the city by taking serious drastic actions to prohibit the private vehicles in the city centre because it is the great cause of traffic jam in the city centre.

Analysis of parking spaces as factor leading to traffic Congestion in central business (CBD) district in Dar es
Luyekela, Mayunga, M.
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was how the parking places contribute to traffic congestion in Central Business District at Dar es Salaam (CBD), Primary and Secondary sources of data were used to collect information. Documentary review on journals, new papers and books were used to collect secondary data; and questioners and interview were used to collect primary data. Data were analyze by using Microsoft excel and were presented in form of Tables and explanations were given those findings.
Summary of the study revealed that Poor management of parking which include on-street, parking lots, parking garages, public and private. Also, too much car parking in the wrong location results into large flows of cars to local streets, hence causes traffic congestion. Parking and traffic congestion were inter-related in the sense that the absence of parking spaces results to traffic congestion situations.
It is concluded that, there are many challenges on determining how parking places contribute to traffic congestion in Central Business District at Dar es Salaam (CBD).The challenges are lack of safety and comfort for the pedestrian movement, inadequacy of parking spaces, rapid increase in number of cars, inadequate road infrastructure, insufficient of location of parking places, favorable parking prices (cost charges) and demand for parking is greater than the amount of space available
It is recommended that shared parking in the destinations should be encouraged also public parking including on-street, municipality’s off street and commercial parking (for profit) facilities generally may serve multiple destinations. Special shuttle buses or free transit service may be provided, building of underground and upstairs packinghouse should be emphasized so as to reduce the amount of land required for parking facilities, reduce the use of private automobile and increase an affordable and reliable public transport. Rates should be set to optimize parking facility use. Parking charge to be increased. Introduction of modern railway transport systems across the city. Diversification of basic social services from city center to other areas outside the city, Introduction of Restrictive policy should implemented.

The cost of motorcycle’s accident in Dar es Salaam ‘a case study of Kinondoni Municipality

The cost of motorcycle’s accident in Dar es Salaam ‘a case study of Kinondoni Municipality
Kashoro, Amina
ABSTRACT
Understanding the cost of the road traffic accidents has been of interest to many scholars and policy makers for a long time, Motorcycle injuries constitute a major but neglected emerging public health problem in developing countries (Tanzania being among them) and contribute significantly to the overall road traffic injuries. However, motorcycle accidents which cause injuries and death have not received the adequate attention they deserve as the situation is worsening. The general objective of the study was to examine the cost of motorcycle accidents in Kinondoni Municipality.
Case study research design was used in the methodology. A sample size of 70 respondents was involved. Data collected were descriptively analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
The respondents argued that, motorcycle accidents mainly due to driving a motorcycle without formal training (70%). However, motorcycle accidents deprived people of their social status (70%) and caused marriage separations to those who were seriously affected by the accidents and motorcycle accidents necessitated the presence of permanent dependence to relatives of the victims as reported by (75%) of the respondents. The cost associated with motorcycles accident was found to be on medical treatment, repair of motorcycles and in general life to the victims.
The study concludes by arguing for the need to enforce laws to those who violate the rules by being fined or withholding their licenses to alleviate motorcycle accidents in kinondoni municipality. However, the researcher argues for the enhancement of drivers‟ skills on the road through continuous training while honoring other users of the road by adhering to laws and changing the driver’s behaviors.
